American actress and singer Auli’i Cravalho was born in Kohala, Hawaii. Cravalho rose to prominence after her acting debut in the hit 2016 Disney film, Moana. Before Auli’i’s big breakthrough, she was a freshman at Kamehameha Schools’ in Kapalama. But a chance discovery by a talent agent in Oahu changed her life forever.
The agent encouraged Cravalho to audition for the role of Moana in the upcoming film. Disney had advertised an open casting call for the role, and although Auli’i was hesitant, she agreed to at least try. Cravalho was among the last in a line of hundreds of young actresses to audition for Moana, but despite the odds, she won the role.
The rest, as they say, is history. So far, Auli’i’s career is on the rise with multiple award recognitions for her performance, including nominations for an Alliance of Women’s Film Journalists Award; a Washington D.C. Film Critics Association Award; and a Kid’s Choice Award. Currently, Cravalho is slated to appear in the upcoming television series Drama High. The NBC series is slated to premiere in 2017.
