English singer-songwriter David Gray was born in 1968 in Cheshire. Gray spent his formative years growing up in Altrincham and then attended both the Liverpool School of Art and Carmarthenshire College of Art as a young man. Although Gray released a number of albums in the early 1990’s, it was his fourth album, White Ladder, that was an instant success and major breakthrough for the artist.
After signing with ATO Records, David Gray developed what has since become his trademark “folktronic” sound, releasing the album White Ladder in 2000. White Ladder shot to the top of the charts in the UK, becoming one of the country’s best selling albums of the decade. The album also peaked in the top forty in the United States and charted equally as well internationally, spawning the hits “This Year’s Love,” “Please Forgive Me,” “Sail Away,” “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye,” and the album’s most successful single, “Babylon.”
Since then, David Gray has released a half-dozen chart-topping albums, including: A New Day at Midnight (2002), Life in Slow Motion (2005), Draw the Line (2009), Foundling (2010), and Mutineers (2014.) Gray’s albums have consistently landed in the top twenty in both the UK and the United States, with the additional charting singles: “The Other Side,” “Be Mine,” “The One I Love,” “Hospital Food,” “Alibi,” and “You’re the World to Me.”
David Gray continues to perform and record, with an extensive supporting lineup that includes well-known musicians Rob Malone (on bass and guitar), Caroline Dale (on cello and piano), and David Kitt (on guitars and keyboards.) Gray has been thus far nominated for four Brit Awards (with two of those nominations for Best British Male.) He has also won two Ivor Novello Awards and two Meteor Music Awards (for “Babylon,” “The Other Side,” and the album White Ladder.) Gray’s latest album, Gold in a Brass Age, is set for release in March of 2019.
