The artist known as Five for Fighting was born Vladimir John Ondrasik in 1965 in Los Angeles. Young Vladimir grew up in a musical family, and he was highly influenced by his parents and inspired to begin studying the piano and guitar at an early age. Initially, Vladimir set his sights on a career as a songwriter, but by the time he was in college, he was writing and recording his own music under the moniker Five for Fighting.
Five for Fighting signed with EMI and released the debut album, Message for Albert, in 1997. The album was moderately successful, but after switching to Capitol Records, Five for Fighting released his sophomore effort, America Town, featuring the hit single “Superman (It’s Not Easy),” which rose to the top of the mainstream and adult contemporary charts. The album’s follow-up single, “Easy Tonight,” also fared well, reaching platinum status and establishing Five for Fighting’s career, which would span well into the new millennium.
After America Town, Five for Fighting released The Battle for Everything (2004), Two Lights (2006), and Slice (2009), featuring the songs “The Devil in the Wishing Well,” “Silent Night,” “The Riddle (You and I),” “Chances,” “Slice,” and the megahit “100 Years,” which became an anthem for an entire generation of high school seniors as they approached graduation. In addition, Five for Fighting has written music for a number of other artists, including Josh Groban and the Backstreet Boys, and his music can be found on the soundtracks to film ssuch as Everyone’s Hero and August Rush.
Five for Fighting continues to perform and record, frequently supporting such charitable organizations as Operation Homefront and Save the Children. Most recently, Five for Fighting released the album Bookmarks (2013), featuring the song “What If.”
