The American author Mary Higgins Clark was born in 1927 in New York. Young Mary grew up in reasonable affluence; her parents were owners of a successful Irish pub and Clark and her siblings spent their time in the Bronx family home and a summer home on Long Island. The family thrived even through the Great Depression, and were very generous with their resources, helping those less fortunate.
Mary’s childhood was still filled with challenges, beginning with the unexpected sudden loss of her father to a heart attack when she was a child. Clark began writing creatively while still in elementary school, encouraged by her teachers and her mother. After graduating from high school, Mary worked a number of odd jobs to help the family, now far less wealthy after the loss of her father. Clark also enrolled at NYU to study creative writing and wrote her first short story, “Stowaway,” which found its way to publication.
Clark’s debut novel, Where are the Children?, was acquired by Simon & Schuster in the early 1970’s and went on to become a hit. The book set the stage for a career which has since spanned five decades and resulted in more than fifty best-selling novels, with hundreds of millions of copies sold. Now into her early nineties, Clark continues to write; her most recent novel, The Cinderella Murder, was published in 2014.
