The singer, producer, and actress known as Monica was born Monica Denise Brown in 1980. Monica was born and raised in Georgia, and as a child she became involved in her local church choir. Her talents as a performer became quiet evident when she was very young, and she was discovered at the age of eleven after a representative from Arista Records caught a performance of Monica at a Dallas auditorium. The young girl’s rendition of Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All” impressed the producer so much that he offered Monica her first recording contract.
Monica’s debut album, Miss Thang, was released in 1995 and rose into the top forty on the mainstream charts and top ten on the R&B charts. The album spawned three chart-topping singles: “Before You Walk out of My Life,” “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days),” and “Like This and Like That.” But it was Monica’s second album, The Boy is Mine, which earned her a Grammy for the title track and spawned the additional major hits “Angel of Mine” and “The First Night.” The Boy is Mine brought Monica to the forefront of R&B and made her one of the most recognizable artists of the decade.
Since that time, Monica has released the additional albums: All Eyez on Me (2002), After the Storm (2003), The Makings of Me (2006), Still Standing (2010), and – most recently – New Life (2012.) The albums have spawned the additional R&B hits: “All Eyez on Me,” “So Gone,” “Knock Knock/Get It Off,” “U Should’ve Known Better,” “Everytime tha Beat Drop,” “Trust,” “Everything to Me,” “Love All Over Me,” “Until It’s Gone,” and “It All Belongs to Me.” Over the years, Monica has also appeared as a guest artists on a number of singles for other performers, including Jermaine Dupri (on “I’ve Got to Have It”) and Trina (on “Always.”)
In the late 1990’s, Monica also launched a career as an actress, appearing in such films as Boys and Girls (2000), American Dreams (2003), and ATL (2006.) Her greatest strength is still as a performer and singer, though, and her record sales exceed more than twenty-five million albums sold worldwide. Currently, Monica lists at number twenty-four on Billboard’s Top R&B artists of the past twenty-five years.
