Robin Thicke was born in 1977 in Los Angeles, California, to actors Alan Thicke and Gloria Loring. Robin’s father Alan had been known for years in his role as the father on the hit television series Growing Pains. Although Robin’s parents divorced when he was young, he grew up in a household filled with the influence of the entertainment industry, and so it wasn’t surprising that Robin would follow in his parents footsteps and pursue a career in acting or other type of performance.
Thicke’s career actually began as a songwriter, and he penned a number of hits for other artists, including Brandy, Jordan Knight, and Christina Aguilera. By the turn of the millennium, Robin Thicke was ready to pursue a career as a performer in his own right, and so he released his debut single, “When I Get You Alone,” in 2002. The song was only a moderate success in the United States, but fared much better in Europe, where it rose into the top twenty on the charts in Belgium, Australia, Italy, and the Netherlands. A debut album, A Beautiful World, followed in the next year, although it barely reached into the Billboard 200 and sold moderate numbers of copies.
After signing to the Star Trak record label, Thicke began again working on another album, and released The Evolution of Robin Thicke in 2006. An additional three albums followed; Something Else (2008), Sex Therapy (2009), and Love After War (2001), featuring the moderately successful singles “Lost Without U,” “Magic,” and “Sex Therapy,” before Thicke released his smash hit single “Blurred Lines” off the album of the same name (2012.) The album and single were enormous hits, garnering Robin critically acclaim and commercial success. A controversial performance of the song at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards only helped to further bolster the song’s popularity, and it rose to the number one spot.
Since that time, Robin Thicke has been recognized with multiple industry award nominations, including three American Music Award nominations (for Single of the Year, Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist, and Favorite Soul/R&B Album) and three Grammy Award nominations (for Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album.) Thicke’s career as a performer is just now starting to rise quickly, and he has plans for continued album releases and performances in the future.
