British singer-songwriter and DJ Samantha Ronson was born in 1977 in St. John’s Wood, London. Samantha’s parents divorced when she was very young, and her mother eventually re-married to Mick Jones, the guitarist for the band Foreigner. The change brought the family to New York City, where Ronson spent her formative years. Although her household was filled with musical influences, thanks to her step-father’s work, she initially chose to attend New York University to pursue a degree in philosophy.
Samantha’s work as a DJ started when a friend of hers who owned a nightclub asked if she might be interested in spinning at the club one evening for some extra cash. Her work as a DJ led to an offer from Roc-A-Fella Records for a contract as a performer, and in 2002 Ronson entered the studio to begin work on her debut album, produced by Duncan Sheik. The album, Red, was never fully released but the singles “Fool,” “Built This Way,” and “Pull My Hair Out” all made it to the airwaves, and the latter was featured on the soundtrack to the film The Woodsman. “Built This Way” was also featured in the film Mean Girls, and an additional song, “Wanted,” recorded with Rhymefest, was featured in the film Half Nelson.
Samantha Ronson is also well-known for her remixes for some of the era’s most notable artists, including Lady Gaga (“Do What U Want”) and The Chainsmokers (“Erase.”) Ronson is currently the resident DJ at both the Chateau Nightclub & Gardens and the Borgata. Additional DJ-ing gigs include some of the world’s most high-profile gatherings, including the Sundance Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Super Bowl, and the VMA Awards.
