The American indie rock band The National was established in Ohio by founding members Matt Berninger and Scott Devendorf. The two musicians met while at the University of Cincinnati and started to write music together, drawing from bands like Pavement for inspiration.
Devendorf and Berninger added additional musicians to the lineup and remained together for five years under the band name “Nancy,” before changing up musicians and re-establishing as The National in 1999. All the musicians relocated to New York, where they began performing at various venues along the Lower East Side, including the Luna Lounge. By 2000, The National had acquired enough funds to record a debut album, and the self-released The National arrived in 2001. The album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers followed in 2003, and earning The National a recording contract with Beggars Banquet Records.
It was The National’s major-label debut, Alligator, that finally earned them some critical acclaim upon its released in 2005. But the album Boxer (2007) finally put the band on the map, making its way onto the mainstream charts in the United States and in five other countries. The album High Violet (2010) became The National’s biggest breakthrough, however, rising into the top five in the United States and also into the top ten internationally. The album spawned the charting singles “Bloodbuzz Ohio” and “Anyone’s Ghost,” and set the stage for the album
Trouble Will Find Me, which exceeded that success in 2013, earning The National its first Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.
Today, The National continues to perform and record with the current lineup of Matt Berninger, Scott Devendorf, Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, and Bryan Devendorf. The National’s most recent single release, “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness,” just became the group’s first number one hit. The National’s latest album, Sleep Well Beast, arrived in September of 2017.
