Butch Walker was born in 1969 in Cartersville, Georgia. By the time he was a teenager, Butch was already playing guitar and performing with a number of bands, but in 1988 he experienced his big breakthrough as a member of the band Byte the Bullet, when the band signed its first major record deal. Shortly after signing, Byte the Bullet changed their name to SouthGang, and released the albums Tainted Angel (1991) and Group Therapy (1992.)
Although Southgang experienced significant commercial success, Butch Walker disbanded the group and spent the next few years establishing other bands (The Floyds and Marvelous 3), before launching a solo career in 2001. Since that time, Walker has released a series of albums on his own: Left of Self- Centered (2002), Letters (2004), The Rise and Fall of Butch Walker and the Let’s Go Out Tonites (2006), Sycamore Meadows (2008), I Liked it Better when You Had No Heart (2010), The Spade (2011), and Afraid of Ghosts (2015.) Butch’s albums have been met with considerable success, but it’s as a producer that he has found even greater critical acclaim.
Butch Walker has also produced music for some of the biggest names in rock, including: Sevendust (Seasons, 2003); Avril Lavigne (Under My Skin, 2004; The Best Damn Thing, 2007; and Goodbye Lullaby, 2011); Simple Plan (Still not Getting Any, 2004); Wakefield (Which Side Are You On, 2005); Pink (I’m Not Dead, 2006; Funhouse, 2008; and The Truth About Love, 2012); PUFFY (Splurge, 2006 and Bring It!, 2009); Quietdrive (When All That’s Left Is You, 2006); Rock Star Supernova (2006); Bowling for Soup (The Great Burrito Extortion Case, 2006); Kate Perry (One of the Boys, 2008); All Time Low (Nothing Personal, 2009); Gavin DeGraw (Sweeter, 2011); Taylor Swift (Red, 2012); and Fall Out Boy (Save Rock and Roll, 2013.) Butch Walker’s talents are much sought after in the industry, and he has been recognized with a number of awards and accolades from a variety of academies. In 2012, a documentary film about Butch Walker’s life premiered at the Nashville Film Festival The film, Out of Focus, follows his life and projects, and portrays his passion for music.
Butch Walker continues to perform and record. His latest album, Stay Gold, was released in 2016 and features the singles “Descending,” “East Coast Girl,” and “Stay Gold.” It was self-produced by the artist, like most of his previous releases.
