The singer known as JoJo was born Joanna Noelle Blagden Levesque in 1990 in Vermont but grew up in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Both parents were music lovers, and both used to sing frequently in their local church choir, and so it was no surprise when two-year old JoJo began to imitate her mother as she practiced hymns. By the time she was in elementary school, JoJo was performing as a musical prodigy on such shows as the Oprah Winfrey Show and Maury, leading to her first offer for a record deal at the age of six.
JoJo’s mom refused the offer, however, due to JoJo’s young age, but she continued to encourage her daughter’s interest in music and offers for performances. By 2003, at the age of twelve, her mother agreed to allow her to sign with Blackground Records and begin working on a debut. JoJo’s debut single, “Leave (Get Out),” released in 2004, and made JoJo the youngest singer in America to have a number-one single.
Since that time, JoJo has released the albums JoJo (2004) and The High Road (2006), featuring the top ten pop hits “Baby It’s You” (featuring Bow Wow) and “Too Little Too Late,” and the top forty hits “Anything” and “Disaster.” JoJo’s extensive headlining tours, beginning in 2007 and running all the way through 2013, have expanded her fan base even further, and she has also performed as an opening act for such notable artists as Timbaland, Usher, and Joe Jonas.
So far in her career, JoJo has been nominated for multiple industry awards, including two Billboard Music Award nominations for Female New Artist of the Year and Mainstream Top 40 Single of the Year (for “Leave (Get Out.) JoJo has also appeared in a number of films and television shows, including: American Dreams, Aquamarine, RV, True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet, House of Glam and Hawaii Five-0.
