The Skatalites are a band formed in 1964 in Jamaica. The group originally consisted of vocalist Doreen Shaffer, among others who all have left, and now consists of Shaffer along with saxophonist Azemobo Audu, trombonist Andre Murchison, trumpet player Travis Antoine, bassist Val Douglas, guitarist Natty Frenchy, keyboardist Ken Stewart, and drummer Trevor Thompson.
The Skatalites originally recorded in 1964 and released their debut album Ska Authentic that year while touring in Jamaica. After 1965 they would break up into two separate bands while making an occasional reunion at various festivals. Eventually, they reunited in 1983 and moved to the US. From then on they released a multitude of reggae albums that charted well and received critical acclaim.
The Skatalites have performed at various arenas and festivals over the year including Reggae Sunsplash, among others. The Skatalites have had their music featured in major publications including the Red Bull Music Academy and The Independent, among others. The band was also featured on the album True Love from Toots and the Maytals which went on to win the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
The Skatalites released a live album in 2017 and have been touring on and off over the past couple of years.
