The Jamaican reggae and dancehall DJ known as Yellowman was born Winston Foster in 1956 in Kingston. Foster grew up in an orphanage, where he suffered cruel bullying at the hands of his classmates due to his albinism. But Winston found solace in music, and in the 1970’s he began competing at DJ contests around the country under the moniker Yellowman, eventually establishing a growing following.
By the early 1980’s, Yellowman’s popularity in Jamaica had grown to such a point that he’d garnered the attention of Colubmia Records, which signed the artist in 1982. Yellowman’s debut album, Mister Yellowman, arrived later that same year and earned the artist instant success. The follow-up album, Zungguzungguguzungguzeng, was equally successful.
Yellowman’s legacy has in part been due to his influence on modern day hip-hop, with notable performers such as Mos Def, Tupac Shakur, and Notorious B.I.G. all having used Yellowman’s music in their own works. In recent years, Yellowman’s music has become more socially conscious, and he continues to produce and release albums regularly.
