J Balvin Biography
J Balvin is a Colombian singer and performer born in 1985. He was born and raised in Colombia before coming to the US via a student-exchange program, later moving to New York City later on. Influenced by American rap and his local reggaeton, Balvin began his career in the mid-2000s by freestyling across the city and signing with a Colombian label later in the decade. In 2014, he release his breakout single “6 AM.”
Balvin would top the Latin charts and receive numerous feature requests from many popular American artists such as Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. His sophomore project, Energia, launched him into global success with his single “Ginza.” Balvin received numerous certifications and began touring across Europe and the US. As he honed the balance between Latin music and American music, he saw further success.
Balvin’s debut peaked at #10 on the US Latin chart. His next three albums would all top the US Latin chart and peak at #38, #15, and #9 on the Billboard 200 chart. They were also certified quadruple Platinum, octuple Platinum, and double Platinum by the RIAA, respectively. “6 AM” would be certified Diamond and peak at #3 on the US Latin chart. Blavin has had numerous chart-topping singles, including peaking at #3 on the Hot 100 chart as the main artist with Beyonce on “Mi Gente” and #1 as a featured artist on Cardi B’s “I Like It.” He has also won 5 Latin Grammy Awards and been nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Balvin released his latest solo project, Colores, to critical acclaim, peaking at #15 on the Billboard 200 chart and #2 on the US Latin chart. It has also been certified double Platinum by the RIAA.
