Tommy Lee was born in 1962 in Athens, Greece. Long before Lee rose to fame as the founding member of the heavy metal band Motley Crue, he grew up in California influenced by the sounds of Van Halen, Kiss, AC/DC, and Led Zeppelin. Young Tommy played the drums in his high school marching band and shortly after graduation started his first successful band, Suite 19, which frequently played along the Los Angeles Sunset Strip.
In the early 1980’s, Lee formed Motley Crue with fellow band mates Vince Neil, Mick Mars, and Nikki Sixx. Their debut album, Too Fast for Love, was released independently and caught the attention of Elektra Records, which signed Motley Crue in 1982. The rest, as they say, is history; Motley Crue went on to become one of the eras most successful and acclaimed heavy metal bands, bringing audiences the hits: “Shout at the Devil,” “Smokin’ in the Boys Room,” “Home Sweet Home,” “Girls Girls Girls,” and “Dr. Feelgood,” to name a few.
In recent years, Tommy Lee has turned to DJ-ing as another outlet for his creative talents. Performing alongside DJ Aero, Lee has become known for a versatile approach to the turntable, branching into everything from techno to hip-hop to breakbeat to progressive. The gigs are Lee’s opportunity to tap into his early love of dance music and the experiences he had as a teenager during L.A’s burgeoning underground rave culture. Although Tommy Lee & DJ Aero established themselves in 2004, it wasn’t until recent years that they began touring extensively, playing at such notable clubs as Pacha in New York, Stereo in Montreal, Bliss in New Jersey, and Cameo in Miami.
When he is not performing in one capacity or another, Tommy Lee is an avid supporter of animals rights and has been one of SeaWorld’s most publicly vocal critics. He also recently joined forces with PETA to criticize the Calgary Stampede’s inhumane treatment of horses and to call for legislation to protect animals from abuse.
