American socialite Paris Hilton was born in 1981 in New York City, to Rick and Kathy Hilton, heirs to the Hilton Hotels family fortune. As a child, Paris moved around frequently, living sometimes in luxurious hotel suites and in homes in the Hamptons of New York, Manhattan, and Beverly Hills. As a teenager, Paris was expelled from her high school in Connecticut for violating school rules, and so she chose to drop out and instead earned a GED certification.
Paris had modeled throughout her childhood, but at the age of nineteen she signed on with T Management, Donald Trump’s modeling agency. It was around this time that she became well known for her partying habits, her club-going activities becoming a focus for entertainment news programs and gossip columns. By 2001, Paris had been dubbed New York’s “It” girl, and her notoriety only increased when a videotape revealing intimate details of Paris’s relationship with Rick Salomon was leaked to the public.
The timing of the tape release coincided with the launch of the reality television series The Simple Life, in which Paris and her close friend Nicole Richie are followed through their daily lives. The tape became a viral internet sensation, and inadvertently boosted enthusiasm for the show as well. In 2004, Paris released her best-selling book Confessions of an Heiress, and then shortly thereafter she launched a career as a singer, with the release of a self-titled debut album.
Hilton’s debut, “Stars Are Blind,” became a worldwide hit after its release in 2006, and bringing the album Paris to the number six spot on the mainstream charts. By 2008, Paris Hilton was one of the most recognized celebrities in the world, and over the next few years she appeared in multiple television spin-offs (including Paris Hilton’s My New BFF (2008); Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend (2009); and The World According to Paris (2011.) She also began DJ-ing in 2012, starting with a performance at the Sao Paulo Pop Music Festival.
Today, Paris Hilton is one of the celebrities best known for simply being famous. Her name has graced her own fragrance line, an accessory line, and dozens of endorsements, earning her millions of dollars and making her one of the most intriguing public figures of the ear.
