The record producer and DJ known as Marley Marl was born Marlon Williams in 1962. Before Marley Marl rose to fame as one of hip-hop’s most influential producers, he began as the producer for the Juice Crew, working for such notable stars as Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane.
Marley Marl set himself apart from other producers of the era when he became the first to use reprogrammed breakbeat samples in music. The technique was first featured on MC Shan’s single “The Bridge,” which featured a breakbeat from the Honey Drippers’ hit “Impeach the President.” By the mid 1980’s, Marl was in high demand, working for Tuff City Records and Uptown Records, producing for Heavy D, MC Shan, Masta Ace, and Kool G Rap & DJ Polo. Marley Marl co-founded Cold Chillin’ Records around this time as well, providing much of the music for what has now become known as hip-hop’s Golden Era.
Although Marley Marl went on to release some of his own albums, including Hip Hop Dictionary (2000), Re-entry (2001), and Hip-Hop Lives (2007), he is still best known as one of the industry’s most successful producers. In recent years, Marley Marl has become well-known as a radio DJ in New York. He was also recently recognized by the Berklee College of Music for his contributions to the industry.
