The jam band known as Dumpstaphunk was established in 2003 by New Orleans musician Ivan Neville. The Neville Brothers were already a well established music powerhouse at the time, but Ivan was looking for a solo setup for his upcoming performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. To round out the performance lineup, Ivan brought in musicians Raymond Weber and his cousin Ivan Neville, and Dumpstaphunk was born.
The performance was met with critical acclaim, and set the stage for the band’s success for the next decade and beyond. Over the next few years, Dumpastaphunk performed at notable music festivals such as Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Gathering of the Vibes, Hangout Festival, and Outside Lands, in addition to an annual performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Dumpstaphunk has also released three albums: Listen Hear—Dumpstafunk (2007), Everybody Want Sum (2010), and Dirty Word (2013.)
Today, Dumpastaphunk continues to perform with Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, Tony Hall, Nick Daniels III, Alvin Ford Jr., Alex Wasily, and Ryan Nyther. The band has been recognized by the New York Times as “…the best funk band from New Orleans right now,” and by Rolling Stone as “one of New Orleans’ most prestigious modern funk ensembles.”
