The rock band Big Head Todd and the Monsters was established in the mid 1980’s in Colorado, by founding members Rob Squires, Brian Nevin, and Todd Park Mohr. The three men had known each other while in high school, attending Columbine High School, and they later attended the University of Colorado together as well. While in college, the trio began performing around the Fort Collins, Boulder, and Denver areas of Colorado, establishing a following and growing a fan base.
Big Head Todd and the Monsters established Big Records in the late 1980’s and used it as a platform to release their debut album, Another Mayberry, in 1989. Shortly after its release, Big Head Todd and the Monsters began to tour nationwide, in preparation for their sophomore effort, Midnight Radio, which released in 1990. Both albums enjoyed a slow and steady rise, eventually garnering the attention of Giant Records, which signed the group in 1993.
Since then, and with the addition of Jeremy Lawton on keyboards, Big Head Todd and the Monsters has released the albums Sister Sweetly (1993), Stratagem (1994), Beautiful World (1997), Live Monsters (1998), Riviera (2002) Crimes of Passion (2004), All the Love You Need (2007), Rocksteady (2010), and 100 Years of Robert Johnson (2011.) Two of the albums, Stratagem and Beautiful World, have risen into the top 100 on the mainstream charts, although Big Head Todd and the Monsters’ recent approach to marketing sales through the internet has proven even more effective, with Riviera rising to the number two spot for internet albums. The albums have spawned the mainstream hits “Bittersweet,” “Broken Hearted Savior,” “Circle,” “Resignation Superman,” “Boom Boom,” and “In the Morning,” which was featured in the movie Blown Away (1994.)
Big Head Todd and the Monsters recently returned to the studio in preparation for their next studio album release, Black Beehive, scheduled for 2014.
