The Grateful Dead tribute band known as the Dark Star Orchestra was established in 1997 by Scott Larned and John Kadlecik. Dark Star Orchestra imitates the genuine sound of the Dead with remarkable accuracy, and periodically has even been joined by original Grateful Dead members (including Phil Lesh and Bob Weir) for performances on occasion.
DSO has received a significant amount of praise from industry critics for its ability to "raise the Dead," and Rolling Stone Magazine has taken note of Dark Star Orchestra’s meticulous attention to the detail that provides such a spot-on recreation of the Grateful Dead experience. DSO takes note of everything from stage position, equipment, vocal arrangements, and even historical set lists from actual Grateful Dead performances, which are often duplicated with precision.
Dark Star Orchestra continues to perform hundreds of shows every year around the country. Although Scott Larned was lost to a heart attack in 2005 and John Kadlecik left Dark Star Orchestra to join the Lesh/Weir band Further in 2009, Dark Star Orchestra continues to perform with the current lineup of Jeff Mattson, Rob Barraco, Rob Eaton, Dino English, Rob Koritz, Skip Vangelas, and Lisa Mackey. Dark Star Orchestra’s performances include the annual Jam in the Sand, which includes four nights of performances in Jamaica at the "Grand" Lido Negril resorts. Artists such as Steel Pulse and The Bridge have joined DSO for the event previously.
