The American funk and soul band Robert Randolph and the Family Band was established shortly after the turn of the new millennium, by founding member Robert Randolph. Randolph grew up in the 1980’s in New Jersey, where he learned to play pedal steel guitar in his local church. Randolph began his career as a member of the North Mississippi Allstars in 2001, but shortly after contributing to the band’s project, The World, he formed Robert Randolph and the Family Band.
Robert Randolph and the Family Band released a debut album, Live at the Wetlands, in 2002. The album Unclassified followed in 2003, and Robert Randolph and the Family Band got a bit of a boost opening for Eric Clapton on his 2004 tour. The group also opened for Dave Matthews Band later that same year and continued to do so for the next few years. The albums Colorblind (2006), We Walk this Road (2010), and Lickety Split (2013) have followed in recent years, and the single “Ain’t Nothing Wrong with That” has been featured on the television series Grey’s Anatomy and Stomp the Yard.
Today, Robert Randolph and the Family Band is a staple on the festival circuit each year, and Robert Randolph himself continues to be one of the era’s most notable guitarists. Randolph has appeared as a guest artist on albums for dozens of other high-profile musicians, including Dave Matthews, Los Lobos, Buddy Guy, Sawyer Brown, Santana, and Elton John. His work has earned him countless accolades, including inclusion on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Guitarist of All Time.
Robert Randolph and the Family Band continues to perform and record with Randolph backed by musicians Marcus Randolph, Lenesha Randolph, Brett Haas, and Ray Ray Randolph. The group released their latest album, Got Soul, in 2017. Fans can watch the band play live before every Friday-night New York Knicks baseball game when the sport is in season.
