Chef Wylie Dufresne was born in 1970 in Providence, Rhode Island. Today, Dufresne is world renowned for his contributions to molecular gastronomy, the art of blending science into the crafting of new cuisine. But long before he rose to become one of the era’s most well-known chefs, Wylie graduated from the French Culinary Institute in New York and began his career first in Las Vegas, working as chef de cuisine at the Bellagio.
From the Bellagio’s restaurant Prime, Dufresne moved on to become the first chef at the newly opened 71 Clinton Fresh Food before opening his own restaurant, “wd~50,” in New York City on the lower east side. Wylie’s foray into the culinary world earned him a James Beard Foundation nomination for Rising Star Chef of the year and accolades from Food & Wine Magazine and New York Magazine, in addition to his first Michelin Star in 2006. Ten years later, in 2013, Wylie opened Alder in the east village, earning his first James Beard Foundation award for best New York City Chef (after ten years of nominations.)
Today, Wylie Dufresne is known not only as one of the city’s most accomplished chefs, but also for his frequent appearances on such television programs as Iron Chef America, Top Chef, and Top Chef Masters. A rising star both as a restaurateur and a television personality, Wylie Dufresne is definitely a chef to keep an eye on and one to watch further in the coming years.
