American chef and head judge of the Bravo series Top Chef, Tom Colicchio, was born in 1962 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Tom’s rise in the culinary world began when he and his partner opened the Gramercy Tavern in Manhattan in 1994. Within a decade, the restaurant was rated the most popular in the city, and Colicchio was one the rise as one of the era’s most well-known restaurateurs.
Since it’s opening, Colicchio has opened dozens of other restaurants throughout the country, including the New York based Craft, Craftbar, Fowler & Wells, and Riverpark; and the restaurants Craftsteak (in Las Vegas); Beachcraft (in Miami Beach); and Heritage Steak (in Las Vegas, at the Mirage.) Colicchio is also the author of three award-winning books: Think Like a Chef (2000), Craft of Cooking: Notes and Recipes from a Restaurant Kitchen (2003), and Wichcraft: Craft a Sandwich into a Meal – and a Meal into a Sandwich (2009.)
In 2006, Tom Colicchio began his run as the head judge on the reality competition series, Top Chef, the role with which he is still most frequently associated today. The show and it’s spin-off, Top Chef Masters, have earned Colicchio an Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality-Competition Programming. Today, he continues to appear not only on Top Chef, but also on the show Best New Restaurant, which premiered in 2015.
