Freda Payne Biography

Freda Payne was born in 1942 in Detroit. As a child, Young Freda was influenced by the music of such jazz icons as Billie Holiday, and through this inspiration she found her calling as a singer. Her earliest gigs were singing for commercials, but after a move to New York in the early 1960’s, she began to establish a local following and by 1964 she’d secured her first recording contract.

Payne’s debut album, After the Lights Go Down Low and Much More!!!, was released later that same year to critical acclaim. Around the same time, Freda Payne began performing frequently on late night talk shows, and she also accepted a number of roles on Broadway. But it was her smash hit single “Band of Gold” which launched Freda to superstardom in 1970, rising to the top of the charts both in the United States and abroad. For the next decade, Freda Payne gave audiences the hits “Deeper & Deeper,” “Cherish What is Dear to You (While It’s Near To You),” “Bring the Boys Home,” and “You Brought the Joy.”

Although Freda Payne’s hits began to wane in the decades following, in the 1990’s she began to appear in a number of films, including Ragdoll and the Nutty Professor series of films. She also released the albums Comes See About Me (2001) and On the Inside (2007), and appeared on American Idol in 2009 to perform her hit “Band of Gold.” Freda Payne continues to perform and record to this day, and has plans for an additional album in the coming years.
