The Canadian electro-funk act known as Chromeo was established in 2002 by founding musicians Patrick Gemayel and David Macklovitch. The two men met while in high school in Montreal, establishing their first band together when they were only fifteen. The band was actually quite successful considering the youth of its members, and over time, the duo established a unique sound that garnered them a recording contract by the time they were in their early twenties.
Chromeo released the debut album, She’s in Control, in 2004. Although the album didn’t chart, it was critically acclaimed and set the stage for the group’s breakthrough, Business Casual, which arrived in 2010 and reached the number seventy spot on the charts in the United States and the number forty-four spot in Canada. The album also earned Chromeo a Juno Award nomination for Dance Recording of the Year in 2011.
But it was Chromeo’s next album, White Women, which became the duo’s big breakthrough in 2014, rising into the top ten in both the United States and Canada and charting internationally. White Women gave Chromeo the duo’s first top forty hit, “Jealous (I Ain’t with It),” and established a duo on the rise.
Today, the duo known as Chromeo like to joke that they are the “only successful Arab/Jewish partnership” that has ever managed to thrive. The group’s latest release, Head Over Heels, arrived in 2018. The album features the singles “Bedroom Calling,” “Must’ve Been,” and “Bad Decision.”
