The artist known as Sly Stone was born Sylvester Steward in 1943 in Texas. Young Sly’s parents performed frequently along with Sly and his siblings in their local church, and music was a frequent presence in the family household. Before he was a teenager, Sly had already mastered a number of instruments, including drums and guitar, and by the 1960’s he had formed Sly and the Family Stone, reaching a tremendous level of success and establishing the R&B/Funk sound of the era.
After their debut album, A Whole New Thing (1967) brought Sly and the Family Stone to the charts with “Dance to the Music,” the band went on to release a series of hit albums for the next few decades, including: Dance to the Music (1968), Stand! (1969), Fresh (1973), Small Talk (1974), Heard Ya Missed Me, We’ll I’m Back (1976), Back on the Right Track (1979), and Ain’t but the One Way (1982.) By the mid 1970’s, Sly had begun recording his own solo albums, and collaborating with other artists, including Funkadelic and Earth, Wind and Fire.
In the new millennium, Sly Stone has enjoyed a small comeback, reuniting with the Family Stone at the Grammy Awards in 2006 and appearing with such bands as Rufus for live performances. He has also recently performed at the African Festival of the Arts in Chicago in 2009, and in 2011, he released the album I’m Back! Family & Friends.
