James “JT” Taylor was born in 1953 in New Jersey. JT’s first foray into the music world was when he and his friends formed their own band when he was thirteen, although he found much greater success after joining Kool & the Gang in 1978. Within a year, Taylor was serving as the band’s lead singer and played an instrumental role in bringing them into the 1980’s, where Kool & the Gang enjoyed their greatest period of success.
With Kool & the Gang, JT enjoyed his first Top 10 hit with the single “Ladies Night,” released in 1979. The single became an iconic staple for discos and dance clubs across the nation, and it topped the R&B charts as well. “Celebration” was equally successful a year later, and between 1982 and 1987, Kool & the Gang enjoyed consistent placement on the charts and constant airplay. Despite their enormous success, JT Taylor launched a solo career in 1988, departing from Kool & the Gang and embarking on his own path.
As a solo artist, JT Taylor enjoyed near instant success. His first duet with Regina Belle, “All I Want is Forever,” became the theme song to the film Tap and rose to the top of the R&B charts. During the 1990’s, Taylor released three solo albums, Master of the Game (1989), Feel the Need (1991), and Baby I’ Back (1993), and scored additional hits with the singles “Long Hot Summer Night” and “ Heart to Heart.” JT Taylor also embarked on an acting career in this decade, appearing in the film The Mambo Kings and performing on stage in the “MUSICAL” Raisin.
JT Taylor continues to record and perform in the new millennium, most recently having released a new studio album, Brand New Me.
