CeCe Peniston was born in 1969 in Ohio and grew up mainly in Arizona. Young CeCe began singing in the church choir when she was in elementary school, and shortly after grading from high school, she entered college and a number of beauty pageants, eventually winning the Miss Black Arizona title in 1989. During this time, CeCe continued to write and perform on occasion, until in 1991 she caught the eye of A&M Records, while singing backup for one of the label’s performers.
The label assisted Peniston in the recording and release of “Finally,” which became not only her debut single but a smash hit on the club and dance scene. The song eventually went on to sell three million copies worldwide and paved the way for CeCe’s debut album, also titled Finally. The albums Thought ‘Ya Knew (1994), Good News In Hard Times (1995), and I’m Moving On (1996) followed, bringing Peniston accolades and a number of industry awards. Although little has been heard from Peniston in the new millennium, her music still makes its way into television shows and other media outlets, and her anthem “Finally” is still among the most recognizable hits of the era.
