The American R&B singer known as Martha Wash was born in 1953. Before Martha rose to fame as a member of the Weather Girls, with the smash hit “It’s Raining Men,” Wash sang backup for Sylvester and then joined Two Tons O’ Fun, which would eventually become the Weather Girls.
The Weather Girls released “It’s Raining Men” in 1982 and the single became such a hit that it not only hit the number one spot on the US dance charts but also the number one spot internationally. The song went on to become an iconic anthem for the disco era and is still played regularly today. After the Weather Girls dissolved, Martha Wash went on to record a number of other hits, including the albums Martha Wash (1993) and The Collection (1998), which spawned the hits “Carry On,” “Runaround,” and “Give It To You.”
Wash’s legacy extends beyond her highly successful dance numbers; in the 1990’s, she became a pioneer for mandatory vocal credits in the industry, having been frequently spurned by labels for appropriate credit because of her lack of “marketability.” Ultimately, Martha Wash sang on far more hits than she has been credited for, until in the early 1990’s the laws were changed to require a fair crediting of artists on singles, albums, and music videos.
In recent years, Martha Wash has performed at a number of events and campaigns, most notably those benefiting the LGBT community. She performed at the opening ceremonies for the OutGames in Montreal in 2006, and in 2008 she performed at the Big Gay Day in Australia, the Chicago Gay Pride Street Fest, and at DC Capital Pride in 2009. Her most recent appearance, on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2012, preceded the release of her latest album, Something Good, which arrived in 2013.
