The American bass guitarist Michael Henderson was born in 1951. Best known for his work in the 1970’s alongside such notable performers as Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis, Henderson has grown to become one of the most influential soul and jazz guitarists of the modern era.
Henderson’s big breakthrough cam in early 1970 when he began touring with Stevie Wonder. A chance meeting with Miles Davis while on tour for Wonder led to his decade-long collaboration with Davis, after which time Henderson launched a solo career. With Davis, Henderson contributed to such notable albums as: The Cellar Door Sessions (1970), On the Corner (1972), Get Up with It (1974), and Dark Magus (1977.) In the late 1970’s, Michael Henderson signed with Arista Records as a solo artist; he remained with the label until his retirement in the mid 1980’s.
Michael Henderson’s legacy includes more than a million units in albums sales and a legendary style of bass riffs which to date have been sampled by such performers as Jay-Z, L.L. Cool J, Sugar Ray, and even Eminem. Michael Henderson frequently reunites with other former members of Miles Davis’s band for concerts, and he still plays solo shows occasionally throughout the United States.
