American guitarist and musician Oteil Burbridge was born in 1964 in Washington, D.C. Burbridge rose to prominence on bass guitar for the Allman Brothers Band during their new millennium resurgence, but today he is also one of the era’s most notable guitarists in general, having recorded and performed with high-profile artists such as Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hampton, and Derek Trucks.
Oteil’s career began as a teenager in the D.C. area, where he would perform and collaborate with various local musicians in a variety of genres, including jazz, rock, R&B, and even Brazilian music. After moving to the Atlanta area, Burbridge began to expand his musical experiences even further, and so by the time he was introduced to key members of the jam band scene, Burbridge was ready to join a band full-time as a key members.
That opportunity came first with the Allman Brothers Band in 1997, with whom Oteil Burbridge performed all the way until they disbanded in 2014. His work with the band earned him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Next, he joined the Tedeschi Trucks Band, performing with them for a two-year period, and then in 2000 he formed Oteil and the Peacemakers. In 2001, he joined the trio of Vida Blue for a few years, and then founded Les Brers in 2015.
Today, Oteil Burbridge is most active as a member of Dead & Company, the band consisting of Oteil, Bob Weir, John Mayer, Mickey Hart, Jeff Chimenti, and Bill Kreutzmann. The band convened in the fall of 2015 and continues to perform and record today. They most recently wrapped an extensive tour for the summer of 2017 and will be returning to the studio in the months following.
