The artist known as Lisa Lisa was born Lisa Velez in 1966 in New York City. Long before Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam rose to fame as one of the 1980’s most significant urban contemporary bands, young Lisa grew up in Manhattan, studying music and composition while still in high school. After forming Cult Jam, Lisa Lisa signed to Columbia Records and launched a career that has since lasted for three decades.
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam released their debut single, “I Wonder If I Take You Home,” in 1985. The single rose quickly on the dance/disco charts and eventually also rose into the top ten on the R&B charts. By the summer of that year, the song had risen into the top forty on the mainstream charts, reaching gold status and paving the way for Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam’s debut album, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with Full Force. The album also spawned the singles “Can You Feel the Beat,” “Move Ya Body,” and “All Cried Out,” which rose to the number three spot on the R&B charts and became a smash pop hit in the summer of 1986, sending the album to platinum status.
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam followed their debut success with the albums: Spanish Fly (1987), Straight to the Sky (1989), Straight Outta Hell’s Kitchen (1991), LL77 (1994.) The albums brought fans the additional hits: “Head to Toe,” “Lost in Emotion,” “Someone to Love Me for Me,” “Everything Will B-Fine,” “Go for Yours,” “Just Git It Together,” “Little Jackie Wants to Be a Star,” “Let the Beat Hit ‘Em,” and “Where Were You When I Needed You.”
After disbanding for a lengthy hiatus, Lisa Lisa returned with Life ‘n Love in 2009, featuring the song “Can’t Wait” (in collaboration with Pitbull.) Lisa Lisa continues to perform and record now as a solo artist, and has plans for additional albums and collaborations in the near future.
