The American funk band known as Dazz Band, best known for the song, “Let It Whip,” was established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1976 by founding member Bobby Harris. The Dazz Band signed with 20th Century Records and after expanding its lineup moved to Los Angeles to prepare for a debut album. The Dazz Band’s debut, the single “I Might as Well Forget About Loving You,” arrived in 1978, and ultimately caught the attention of Motown Records. After switching labels, the group released the debut, Invitation to Love, in 1980.
The album spawned the singles “Shake It Up” and “Invitation to Love,” and paved the way for the group’s big breakthrough with the album Keep It Live in 1982. The album rose to the top of the R&B charts, going all the way to number one, and also charted on the US mainstream charts in the top twenty. Keep It Live spawned the smash hit single, “Let It Whip,” which is the song most associated with the Dazz Band still today. The title track also rose into the top twenty on the R&B charts.
Between 1982 and 1998 the Dazz Band released more than twenty additional albums and scores of additional hit R&B singles, including: “On The One For Fun,” “Joystick,” “Let It all Blow,” “Hot Spot,” “Heartbeat,” and “Single Girls.” The Dazz Band continues to perform today, with current members Bobby Harris, Skip Martin, and Donny Sykes.
