The gospel singer Dottie Peoples was born in 1960 in Dayton, Ohio. Young Dottie began singing when she was a child, largely inspired by the gospel choir she would hear during her weekly visits to church with her grandmother. By the time she’d completed high school, Dottie had begun touring in support of other jazz and gospel performers. In the early 1980’s, Peoples launched her own solo career with the release of Surely God is Able, and the album became the start of a career which has since endured for the last three decades.
Surely God is Able also launched the start of Church Door Records, for which Dottie Peoples served as its general manager. In the 1990’s, the label and the gospel genre in general experienced a burst in popularity which led to Peoples’s decision to leave Church Door Records and sign with a major label as a solo artist. Throughout the 1990’s Dottie was the recipient of numerous awards for her gospel work, most notably for her albums On Time God and Live at Salem Baptist Church. One Time God is recognized as the work which transformed both Dottie Peoples’s career and also the nature of gospel music in the industry as a whole.
Since that time, Dottie Peoples has continued to perform among some of the industry’s most notable gospel artists, including Jasper Williams, Kirk Franklin, and Shirley Caesar. Peoples continues to record as well; she most recently released the album I Got This in 2013.
