PJ Morton is an American singer and producer born Paul Morton Jr. in 1981. He was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, and participated in gospel choirs when he was younger. He soon graduated from Morehouse College in 2003 and worked on solo music releasing a couple of projects soon after. It was not until 2010 when pressured by a friend, that Morton auditioned for a keyboardist slot for the band Maroon 5. He won the slot and performed with the band for four years and contributed work on three albums.
PJ Morton’s solo music caught the attention of Mack Maine in 2011 and he was signed to Young Money Entertainment. In 2013 his debut album New Orleans was released to critical acclaim and the song “Only One” with Stevie Wonder was Grammy-nominated. Morton later moved to New Orleans and started Morton Records, and released the Grammy-nominated album Gumbo.
PJ Morton’s work with Maroon 5 includes their chart-topping singles “Payphone,” “Sugar,” and “Girls Like You.” His own music has not received too much success on the charts but constantly finds love on streaming services and awards programs. He eventually won a Grammy in 2019 for his cover of “How Deep Is Your Love.”
PJ Morton is currently nominated for three Grammys at the 2020 awards, including Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album.
