The gospel musician Kirk Franklin was born in 1970 in Fort Worth, Texas. Young Kirk grew up in raised by his great aunt, a woman who was highly supportive of his desire to study music. Although the family was rather poor, she saved so that Kirk could take piano lessons starting at the age of four, and by the time Kirk was seven, he’d already begun to compose music, frequently playing by ear.
Kirk joined his local church choirs and began professional relationships with them which would last well into his early twenties. In the early 1990’s, Franklin established a seventeen-voice choir called “the Family,” and it was with this group that he garnered his first record contract. Eventually the group renamed to become Kirk Franklin & the Family, and released a self-titled debut album in 1993.
The album spent nearly two full years on the charts and even rose into the top of the R&B charts as well. The Family become the first gospel album to reach platinum status, and it paved the way for Kirk Franklin’s career as a gospel music star. Since that time, Kirk Franklin has released multiple albums with the Family, and also as a solo artist, including: The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin (2002), a Season of Remixes (2003), Hero (2005), The Fight of My Life (2007), and Hello Fear (2011.) A compilation album, The Essential Kirk Franklin, was also released in 2012. Collectively his works have earned Franklin fifteen Stellar Awards, thirteen GMA Dove Awards, and seven Grammy Awards.
Kirk Franklin has also composed for film, producing and scoring the soundtrack for the film Kingdom Come in 2001. In addition, Franklin currently hosts the BET series Sunday Best.
