The gospel singer known as Helen Baylor was born in 1953 in Tulsa, Oklahoma but spent her formative years in Los Angeles, California. While still a teenager, she garnered the attention of such notable artists as Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, who chose Helen to perform as their opening act while on tour.
By the late 1960’s, Helen Baylor had signed with the Soultown label as “Little Helen,” releasing the singles “What About Me, Boy” and “The Richest Girl.” Both songs achieved moderate success, and put Baylor on the map as an up and coming soul and R&B singer. In 1970, she joined the cast of the Broadway musical Hair, but within a few years, she’d left the stage and returned to the recording studio to work as a session musician for a number of high profile artists.
Following a struggle with drug addiction that lasted throughout the 1980’s, Helen Baylor re-emerged in 1990 with her first gospel recording, Highly Recommended.
The album was an enormous success, and since that time Helen Baylor has grown into one of the era’s most successful gospel artists. Additional albums from Baylor include: Look a Little Closer (1991), Start All Over (1993), The Live Experience (1995), Love Brought Me Back (1996), My Everything (2002), and Full Circle (2006.)
