The Welsh singer Charlotte Church was born in 1986 in Llandaff, Wales. In the mid 2000’s, Charlotte rose to fame as a classical vocalist with extraordinary talents that belied her age. As a child, Charlotte rose to fame after she sang, impromptu and over the phone, “Pie Jesu” on the television show This Morning, in 1997. It wasn’t long before offers to perform alongside high-profile performers, such as Shirley Bassey, began to pour in.
In the early 2000’s, Charlotte Church signed her first recording contract with Sony Music. Her debut album, Voice of an Angel, sold millions of copies upon its release in 1998 and brought her to the number one spot on the British classical charts. The collection of arias and traditional pieces paved the way for the follow-up albums: Charlotte Church (1999), Dream a Dream (2000), and Enchantment (2001.) With each subsequent album, Charlotte Church began to incorporate non-classical influences, such as jazz and pop, until in 2005 she released her first pop album, Tissues and Issues. The album was a bit of a departure for Church, although her classical influences are still apparent on most of her songs. Tissues and Issues spawned the singles “Crazy Chick,” “Call My Name,” “Even God Can’t Change the Past,” and “Moodswings,” all of which fared well on the charts.
Between 2000 and 2006, Charlotte Church garnered a significant number of awards and nominations, including Best Female Artist and British Artist of the Year (from the Classical BRIT Awards); Best British Female (from the BRIT Awards); and Solo Artist of the Year (from the Glamour Awards.) By the year 2007, Charlotte Church had sold more than five million records in the United States along, and approximately double that worldwide. Most recently, Charlotte Church released her first studio album in more than five years. Back to Scratch arrived in 2010 and featured the singles “Back to Scratch,” “Logical World,” and “Snow.”
