The gospel and R&B singer Cheryl Coko Clemons was born June 13, 1970. Long before Clemons rose to fame as a member of the group Sisters With Voices, she sang in her local church choir. As a member of SWV, Cheryl gave audiences five successful albums, but the group disbanded in 1998 and at that time Coko went on to forge a solo career, releasing the album Hot Coko in 1999.
Hot Coko spawned the hit “Sunshine,” which rose into the top forty on the R&B charts. The album was followed by Grateful (2006), A Coko Christmas (2008), and The Winner in Me (2009.) But Cheryl Clemons has become just as well-known for her contributions to hits by other artists, especially her collaboration with Will Smith on “Men in Black (featuring Coko),” released as part of the soundtrack to the hit film in 1997. Coko has also collaborated with Faith Evans & Missy Elliot (on “All the Times,” 1997); Johnny Gill (on “Fire and Desire,” for the soundtrack to Booty Call); Tevin Campbell (on “Everything You Are,” 1999); and Case (for “Face to Face,” featured on the soundtrack to Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns.”)
In recent years, Cheryl Clemons has reunited frequently with her Sisters With Voices members, performing in Los Angeles in 2005 and most recently in 2008 for an event.
