The alternative rock band Lit was founded in 1988, two year after original members Kevin Baldes and Jeremy Popoff met and began performing together. By 1990, the two had added additional members to the lineup and recorded a demo tape, which they began circulating in 1995. The demo eventually caught the attention of Malicious Vinyl Records, which signed them, and within two years Lit had released Tripping the Light Fantastic, their major label debut.
Lit switched to RCA Records in 1998 after Malicious Vinyl folded, and the change proved fortuitous. Lit’s sophomore debut, A Place in the Sun, shot to platinum status and spawned one of their biggest hit singles to date, “My Own Worst Enemy,” which remained on the rock chart in the number one position for a staggering twelve weeks. The songs “Miserable” and “Zip-Lock” were equally successful, and the members of Lit found themselves performing nearly three hundred shows around the world on a massive tour before returning to the studio for a follow-up album.
Atomic was equally successful, bringing Lit another hit with “Lipstick and Bruises,” and the band forged forward with a continually rising level of popularity. This success was tempered by the untimely death of Lit’s drummer, Allen Shellenberger, who died of a brain tumor in 2009. After adding Walker as their new drummer, Lit regrouped, and since 2009 the band has released the additional albums Lit (2004), The View from the Bottom (2012), and the compilation album Platinum & Gold Collection (2004.)
Lit’s music can be heard on a number of notable soundtracks for major films, including: The Replacements (2000), Little Nicky (2000), American Pie 2 (2001), Out Cold (2001), Orange County (2002), Clickstoppers (2002), Triple Play 2002 (2002), and Rock Band 2 (2008.) The band continues to perform, record, and perform, with the current lineup of Jeremy Popoff, Jay Popoff, Kevin Baldes, and Nathan Walker.
