Maksim Cherkovskiy Biography
Ukranian born dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy was born in 1980 in Odessa. Today, Maksim is best known as one of the professional dancers on ABC’s hit reality competition Dancing with the Stars, but long before his rise to fame, Chmerkovskiy began dancing at the age of four.
After immigrating to the United States with his family in 1994, Maksim settled in the area of Brooklyn, where he often worked as a dancer in local Russian restaurants for extra money. By the time he was sixteen, Chmerkovskiy had started dancing competitively, racking up a number of impressive wins, usually in the International Latin category. Maksim and his father opened Rising Stars Dance Academy in New Jersey when he was only sixteen, and he soon began to instruct as well as perform.
Maksim Chmerkovskiy joined the cast of Dancing with the Stars for its second season, and remained with the show for sixteen straight seasons. During that time, Maksim brought his celebrity competitors to the finals five times, with two runner-up finishes. He returned to the show for its twenty-third season.
Today, Maksim Chmerkovskiy continues to teach, train, and compete as a professional dancer. He is one of the directors and founders of the non-profit educational organization Dance Team USA, which seeks to recruit and support future dancers in the country.
