Long before Troy joined the cast of Swamp People, he and his family – for five generations – have been hunting alligators. When the History channel offered Troy and his family an opportunity to appear on the show, the Landrys accepted; they have now been with the show since its inception. Now entering its eighth season, the show explores the three-centuries old tradition of alligator hunting and the unique skills is requires to be successful. Troy is particularly talented in his profession; he is said to have capture more than eighty alligators in a single day at one point.
Alligator season only lasts for about thirty days; during this time Troy Landry and his family, along with a number of other local alligator hunters, have a short window to earn most of their yearly income. The hunting is particularly challenging and brutal, often resulting in injuries and on rare occasions, death. Outside of alligator hunting season, Landry operates a highly successful seafood fishing company that pulls in millions of pounds of crawfish a year. Still, as revealed on the show, a single alligator season, if successful, could be even more lucrative than an entire year of crawfishing.
Swamp People enjoys among the highest ratings for the History channel network, with a viewership that has increased by nearly a million per episode since the show’s inception.
