Nate Berkus Biography

Nate Berkus Biography

The American author, designer, and television personality Nate Berkus was born in 1971 in California. Nate spent his formative years growing up in Minneapolis, where he began working in the design realm immediately after graduating from high school. After finishing his studies at Lake Forest College with majors in Sociology and French, Nate founded Nate Berkus Associates and launched his career as a designer.

Nate rose to prominence in part thanks to his many appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show throughout the 2000’s, where he not only offered advice and help to viewers wanting to improve their home décor, but also coordinated surprise redesigns of viewers’ homes. Berkus published two books during this time – Home Rules: Transform the Place you Live into a Place You’ll Love (2005); and The Things That Matter (2012.) Both rose to become New York Times best sellers. In 2004, Berkus also appeared on Oprah to share the tragic loss of his partner, Fernando Bengoechea, while the two were vacationing in Sri Lanka the moment the Indian Ocean tsunami struck.

Winfrey’s production company, Harpo Productions, later debuted his own show, The Nate Berkus Show. Although the show only lasted two seasons, since it wrapped Berkus has released a number of his own design collections, including his own Target Home collection and a fabric collection at Calico Corners. Most recently, Berkus began work on the NBC series Renovation Nation, which in 2013 changed its title to American Dream Builders.

Berkus and his husband, Jeremiah Brent, were married in 2014. The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Poppy Brent-Berkus, in 2015. The family currently lives in West Hollywood, California.
