Vanessa Jean Simmons was born in 1983 in California. As the daughter of Joseph Simmons (better known as Rev. Run or DJ Run), it was little surprise when Vanessa wished to enter the world of entertainment like her father. Her big break came in 2005 when she and her siblings were featured on the MTV series Run’s House, which chronicled their day to day life.
Run’s House, which ran through 2009, also followed Vanessa and her sister in their various business endeavors, including the launch of their shoe brand, Pastry. In addition to Run’s House, Simmons also began appearing in small roles on various television shows, including Guiding Light, and in films, including Dysfunctional Friends.
Most recently, Vanessa Simmons appeared as a judge for the single-season series Project Runway: Threads. The spin-off of the hit series Project Runway premiered in late 2014 on Lifetime, and featured competitions similar to those featured on Project Runway, but with teen and tween fashion designers competing for prize packages worth over twenty-five thousand dollars. Scholarships and other industry opportunities were also offered to winners of the competition. Vanessa Simmons hosted along with Christian Siriano, Ingrid Nilson, and various guest judges.
