The American folk/Americana singer and songwriter Jackie Green was born Chris Nelson in 1980 in Salinas, California. Jackie began playing piano and then guitar as a young teenager, and by the time he was in his late teens and early twenties he was sitting in with some of the local bands. He began writing his own music shortly thereafter, recording much of his earlier work in a home spun studio in his garage.
Jackie Greene released his first album, Gone Wanderin’, in 2002, and the album was instantly received with critical acclaim, earning the California Music Award for Best Blues/Roots Album. With Greene’s third album, Sweet Somewhere Bound, he began to earn some airplay for his singles, including “Honey I Been Thinking About You,” and garnering a recording contract with Verve Forecast. In 2005, Jackie Greene’s song “I Will Never Let You Go” was used for the Academy Award-winning score to the Brokeback Mountain.
Between 2006 and 2010, Jackie Greene released the additional albums: American Myth (2006), Giving Up the Ghost (2008), Small Tempest (2009), and Till the Light Comes (2010.) He also began touring extensively in support or collaboration with such notable bands as: Gov’t Mule, Susan Tedeschi, Los Lobos, and B.B. King, performing at festivals such as Gathering of the Vibes, Newport Folk, South by Southwest, and Bonnaroo.
In 2013, Jackie Greene replaced Luther Dickinson on guitar for the Black Crowes, remaining with the group until they disbanded in 2015. Greene continues to perform, record, and tour with The Jackie Greene Band, featuring musicians: Nathan Dale, Jon Cornell, Fitz Harris. Greene’s latest album, Back to Birth, was released in 2015.
