The Decemberists were founded in 2000 by Colin Meloy in Portland, Oregon. Meloy teamed up with Nate Query, Jenny Conlee, and Ezra Holbrook. After recording a self-released EP titled 5 Songs in 2001, the Decemberists teamed up with Hush Records to release Castaways and Cutouts, followed by Her Majesty the Decemberists in 2003. The strength of these albums and the band’s unique indie folk sound eventually brought the Decemberists to the attention of Capitol Records, which signed them in 2005.
With Capitol, the Decemberists released their major-label debut, The Crane Wife, in 2006. Immediately the Decemberists launched a supporting tour for the album, starting with an appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The albums The Hazards of Love (2009) and The King is Dead (2011), the latter of which features the song “Down by the Water” which earned the Decemberists a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song. The Decemberists have also released Always the Bridesmaid (2008), a collection of singles which were released one at a time over the course of a year. The Decemberists then embarked on a brief hiatus, reuniting in 2013 to begin work on their next studio album. The result—What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World—arrived in 2015 and featured the single “Make You Better.”
The Decemberists continue to perform and record with the current lineup of Meloy, Query, Conlee, Chris Funk, and Joen Moen. The band’s latest album release, I’ll Be Your Girl, arrived in 2018.
