The American folk group known as Hurray for the Riff Raff was established by banjo player Alynda Lee Segarra in 2006. Segarra grew up in the Bronx, New York, but in her late teens she began traveling cross the country, soaking up the musical influences of various regions. Eventually, she found herself in New Orleans, and established the city as a home base, where she began to recruit other musicians to form a band.
After forming Hurray for the Riff Raff, Segarra and her fellow group members entered the studio to record a self-released debut, It Don’t Mean I Don’t Love You (2008.) The album was followed by Young Blood Blues (2010), and then Hurray for the Riff Raff signed with Loose Music for their next albums, Hurray for the Riff Raff (2011) and Look Out Mama (2012.) Hurray for the Riff Raff got a boost after The Times featured them and their song “Daniella” in a article inspired by the HOB series Treme; the song was listed in their “essential songs of New Orleans” section.
Most recently, Hurray for the Riff Raff signed with their first major label, ATO Records. Their debut with the label, Small Town Heroes, arrived in 2014, to great critical acclaim. Hurray for the Riff Raff continues to perform and record with the current lineup of: Alynda Lee Segarra, Dan Cutler, David Jamison, Casey Wayne McAllister, Yosi Pearlstein, and Sam Doores.
