The singer-songwriter Phillip Philips was born in 1990 in Albany, Georgia. Long before he rose to become the winner of American Idol’s eleventh season, young Phillip fell in love with music and began studying composition and guitar when he was a teenager. When he wasn’t working in the family business, at their pawn shop, he played frequently with other family members, and in 2009, he established the Phillip Phillips band. A number of public appearances around town led to encouragement by many for Phillip to audition for American Idol, and so he auditioned in 2012.
Phillip Phillips rose to the top of the finalists and ultimately won the competition for the season. With comparisons to Dave Matthews, Phillips also quickly became a fan favorite, but he won over the judges with his renditions of such classics as Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight.” But it was his final song, “Home,” which not only secured his future success as a recording artist but broke records for the biggest sales in one week for any other Idol winner’s coronation song.
In 2012, Phillip Phillips embarked on the American Idol LIVE Tour and immediately after sang the anthem at the World Series. At the same time, he prepared for the release of his debut album, The World from the Side of the Moon, which arrived in 2012 and earned Phillips a variety of awards from the Teen Choice Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and World Music Awards. Ultimately, the album rose into the top five on the mainstream charts and the single “Home” went on to sell more than four million copies and find its way into countless film trailers, television shows, and commercials.
Most recently, Phillip Phillips joined first Matchbox Twenty and then later John Mayer on tour, serving as the opening act for both. The second single from The World from the Side of the Moon, “Gone, Gone, Gone,” was released in early 2013 and also rose into the top of the charts. Phillip Phillips is just getting started with his career as a musician, and he currently has plans to enter the studio again to prepare for a sophomore album.
