The rapper and guitarist known as Uncle Kracker was born Matthew Shafer in 1974 in Michigan. Long before Uncle Kracker teamed up with Kid Rock and rose to fame, young Matthew grew up in the Mount Clemens area, influenced by the area’s burgeoning rap music scene. When his close friend Kid Rock began to pursue a career as a musician, Shafer began to work for him as his DJ, performing live with Kid Rock and appearing on Rock’s early album, Early Mornin’ Stoned Pimp.
Uncle Kracker remained with Kid Rock for much of the singer’s rise to fame. In 2000, Uncle Kracker released his debut solo album, Double Wide, which was an enormous success. The album rose into the top ten on the mainstream charts and spawned the hit single “Follow Me.” Uncle Kracker followed up with the album No Stranger to Shame (2002), and then the albums Seventy Two and Sunny (2004) and Happy Hour (2009.) The albums gave audiences the additional singles: “In a Little While,” “Drift Away,” “Memphis Soul Song,” “Smile,” and “Good to Be Me,” featuring Kid Rock. In 2004, Uncle Kracker also appeared on Kenny Chesney’s number-on country hit, “When the Sun Goes Down.”
Uncle Kracker continues to perform and record as a solo artist, and occasionally collaborate with Kid Rock. Uncle Kracker most recently released the album Midnight Special, in 2012. The album rose into the top forty on both the Country Albums charts and on the Independent Albums charts.
