The indie folk band The Head and the Heart was established in Seattle by founding members Josiah Johnson and Jonathan Russell. The two musicians came together throughout open mike nights in the Ballard area, and the duo decided to begin performing together. After teaming up with fellow musicians Keny Hensley, Charity Rose Thielen, Chris Zasche, and Tyler Williams to round out the lineup, they began circulating their demo to a number of record labels.
The Head and the Heart signed with Sub Pop in 2010 and began re-working some of their original material for a debut album. The self-titled result was released in 2011 and spawned the singles “Lost in My Mind,” “Ghosts,” and “Down in the Valley.” The Head and the Heart’s follow-up album, Let’s Be Still, earned the group some moderate success, with the singles “Shake,” “Another Story,” and “Let’s Be Still” making their way to the indie charts. But it was the album Signs of Light, released in 2016 after the group switched to the Warner Bros. label, that became their big breakthrough, with the number one alternative hit “All We Ever Knew.” The song also reached into the top twenty on the rock charts in the United States.
Over the last few years, The Head and the Heart has toured extensively throughout both America and Europe, serving as opening or supporting act for many high-profile bands and musicians such as Dave Matthews, Vampire Weekend, and Death Cab for Cutie. The Head and the Heart also launched its own headlining tour, and recently played at Coachella 2017. After Coachella, the band returned to the studio to begin work on its next studio album, expected within the coming years.
