The band known as Punch Brothers was established in 2006 by founding members Chris Eldridge, Noam Pikelny, Gabe Witcher, Bryan Sutton, Greg Garrison, and Chris Thile. Punch Brothers, know for it’s “Americana-style” bluegrass, signed with Nonesuch Records and released the debut album, Punch, in 2006. The album immediately rose to the top of the bluegrass charts, paving the way for a career which has since been on the rise for Punch Brothers.
By 2008, Punch Brothers had hit the road on an extensive tour to further promote their music. After returning, they re-entered the studio to prepare for their next studio album, Antifogmatic, in 2010. The album also rose to the number one spot, and spawned a number of “newgrass” tracks which were equally successful. Before returning to tour or the studio, Punch Brothers began filming of the documentary, “How to Grow a Band,” which explored the relationship among the members of the band during their rise to the top. The film premiered at the Nashville Film festival in 2011, and then later at the Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival later that year.
After the release of the film, Punch Brothers returned to the studio to prepare for Who’s Feeling Young Now?, released in 2012. The band’s popularity got a big boost after they contributed to the soundtrack of The Hunger Games, with the song “Dark Days.” Since that time, Punch Brothers has also released the album The Phosphorescent Blues, in 2015, and returned to an extensive tour to perform their music for fans across the country.
Punch Brothers continues to perform and record, with the current lineup of Thile, Witcher, Pikelny, Eldridge, and Paul Kowert. Punch Brothers most recent album, The Wireless, arrived in 2015.
